I'm here to bring the no fun with the actual math. A low-cal version of a premium tonic will be far superior, for most people, to regular Schweppes. Some people think zero-cal coke tastes better, for example, so right there's your lower-cal cuba libre. (Highballs are different - you can use a low-cal mixer there and it won't matter. Your diet shouldn't be about punishing yourself with cruddy cocktails. You can order pure dry sweetener from Amazon, but it's in such bulk that you'll never use it all at home.īut my actual advice is, if you are intent on keeping a diet: eat good food and drink in smaller quantities and much less frequently, eat much less calories and healthy in between, and stay in contact with your doctor. The individual coffee-cup packets have some volume added but far less, but the liquid sweetener bottles are the most pure. Keep in mind, however, that if you buy sweetener that sustitutes 1:1 for sugar in the bulk packages at a grocery store, those are all mostly flavorless filler material - almost all artificial sweeteners are some hundred times sweeter than sugar. For the latter option the sugar is not fermenting, so you can replace all of it. You can also make your own orange liqueur and replace the added sugar with, again, the appropriate mix of sweeteners. An approximation is to substitute a mix of orange juice (13kcal/oz) mixed with homemade zero-cal rich simple syrup (use room temp or slightly warm water and a mix of types of sweeteners in the correct sugar equivalent - one packet = 2 tsp). Of these ingredients, the only one you can control is the triple sec. The classic margarita cocktail, a sour (not the highball version, properly called a long or largo margarita), has 2 parts tequila (65kcal/oz), 3/4 parts triple sec (100kcal/oz), and 1/2 part (unsweetened) fresh lime juice (6kcal/oz).
